Review of blackfly (Diptera: Simuliidae) control in South Africa.

The medical, veterinary and economic importance of blackflies in South Africa, and the historical development of blackfly control programmes in various South African rivers, are reviewed in this paper. In 1996 it was estimated that blackflies can cause more than R 88 million damages per annum along the middle and lower Orange River where Simulium chutteri is considered the main pest species. A ...

Survey of blackfly (Diptera: Simuliidae) annoyance levels and abundance along the Vaal and Orange Rivers, South Africa.

Blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are pests in the livestock and labour-intensive farming systems along the major rivers in South Africa. Since 1995, blackflies have been controlled in the Orange River with the larvicide Bacillus thuringienses var. israelensis (Bti). During 2006-2007, the views of livestock farmers concerning blackfly annoyance were determined by means of questionnaires. The r...

Larval antennal sensilla in water-living insects.

An overview of larval antennal sensilla in hemimetabolous and holometabolous water-living insects is given by updating current knowledge on the fine structure of these sensory systems. In the absence of successful electrophysiological studies, the possible function of sensilla is deduced from their architecture. Various kinds of sensilla are described in hemimetabolous insects, such as Ephemero...

Evaluation of the impact of Bacillus thuringiensis serovar israelensis and Temephos, used for the control of Simulium (Chirostilbia) pertinax Kollar, 1832 (Diptera, Simuliidae) on the associated entomofauna, Paraty, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The study was set up to evaluate the impact of two commercial larvicide formulations, Bacillus thuringiensis serovar israelensis base (Bti) at 15 ppm/1 min and temephos at 0.03 ppm of active ingredient, used to control Simulium pertinax populations, on associated non-target entomofauna occupying the same breeding sites. The experiments were carried out on the Pedra Branca and Muricana rivers, o...

Sensitivity analysis of geometric and hydraulic parameters on water depth of flood plain in the AbNik River

Transfer of debris flow caused by floods in the river downstream of the mountains leads to several damages every year. Numerous researches have been carried out on the Mountain Rivers the results of which show the importance of performing more researches to control debris flows in the floodplain because of various effective hydraulic-geometric parameters. For this purpose, AbNik Mountain River l...
